How to determine frame loss duration?

Where can we see results to show traffic loss in ms? (time versus count)

Spirent TestCenter (STC)frame loss duration

This can be found in the Dynamic Results View (DRV).

Go to one of the results view and select Change Results View->Create Views->Create Dynamic/Query View.

Go to the counter selection called Convergence.

There you will find a selection for Frame Loss Duration and Dropped Frame Duration. These results will show the loss measured in time instead of counts.

The expectation is that traffic with no loss is flowing normally until for example when traffic takes a different path after a router goes down. This would cause expected frame loss which the duration of this loss can be used as the convergence time of the new path.

Manually calculating drop frame duration for 128 byte frame (148 Bytes since there are 20 Bytes of preamble/SFD):

  • Drop Count * 148 Bytes * 8 bits = # of bits lost
  • # of bits lost / stream rate = Drop Duration
