HOWTO: Clean up corrupted iTest installation registry

Some users experienced errors that uninstaller failed to remove iTest installation. This error happens when the InstallAnywhere registry file got corrupted. The most common reason is that the install/uninstall process encountered some error which leaves the registry file in an inconsistent state. You may not notice the error since the installation finished or uninstaller removed most files. But the next time when you install and uninstall, you find the uninstaller doesn't work. The most common errors during uninstall (including the uninstaller launched by the installer) are:

  • A command prompt is open in a subdirectory of iTes
  • A file is open by some other program (e.g. IE or Windows explorer is running and it loads dlls through Windows registry which includes iTestExtension.dll)

To remove the corrupted iTest installation and InstallAnywhere registry file, follow these steps:

  1. Close any programs that open iTest files/folders.
  2. Delete the iTest install folder (including program menu and desktop shortcut on Windows).
  3. Delete the iTest entry in .com.zerog.registry.xml file or delete the whole file. This file is located in $HOME on Unix or "C:\Program Files\Zero G Registry\" on windows.
  4. Delete Windows registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\iTest <version>.
